Vagharshapat, also known as Etchmiadzin, is a city in Armenia's Armavir Province, west of Yerevan and near the base of Mount Aragats. It is one of the country's most important religious and cultural centers and is often described as the spiritual center of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The city is surrounded by fertile agricultural land, with orchards, vineyards, and fields forming part of the landscape. Its most significant landmarks are concentrated around the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, while museums, churches, and historic sites provide further connections to Armenia's religious and architectural heritage.

Vagharshapat's identity is closely tied to the Armenian Apostolic Church and its long religious traditions. The Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin is the principal cathedral of the Armenian Church and serves as the seat of the Catholicos of All Armenians. Nearby churches include Saint Gayane, Saint Hripsime, and Saint Shoghakat, each associated with early Christian traditions in Armenia. The Echmiadzin Cathedral complex and these churches form part of the UNESCO World Heritage property known as the Cathedral and Churches of Echmiadzin and the Archaeological Site of Zvartnots. Religious ceremonies, manuscript traditions, and ecclesiastical arts remain important parts of the city's cultural life.

The Mother Cathedral is the city's principal landmark, surrounded by gardens, religious buildings, and the Treasury of the Mother See, which contains sacred objects and works of Armenian ecclesiastical art. Saint Hripsime Church and Saint Gayane Church are notable examples of Armenian stone architecture, while Saint Shoghakat stands nearby. Outside the city, the archaeological site of Zvartnots contains the remains of a large early medieval cathedral set against views of Mount Ararat. The nearby ruins and surrounding agricultural landscape provide a broader view of the historical setting in which Vagharshapat developed as a major religious center.

Food in Vagharshapat reflects the agricultural traditions of the Ararat Valley, with grapes, apricots, vegetables, grains, and dairy products contributing to local cuisine. Armenian staples such as lavash, dolma, khorovats, spas, and gata are commonly found in the region, while fresh fruit and preserves are important products of local households. The city is also known for its connection with Armenian manuscript culture and religious art, represented in collections maintained by the Mother See. Vagharshapat's distinctive character comes from the concentration of churches and religious institutions within a fertile agricultural landscape, alongside the nearby archaeological remains of Zvartnots.
