Golfito is a small port town on Costa Rica's southern Pacific coast, set along a narrow bay on the Golfo Dulce in Puntarenas Province. Steep, forested hills rise immediately behind the town, while the bay provides sheltered waters for boats and fishing activity. Golfito is also an important gateway to the Osa Peninsula and nearby protected areas, including Piedras Blancas National Park. The town's landscape combines rainforest, mangroves, beaches, rivers, and marine habitats, while its streets and waterfront retain the character of a working coastal community rather than a large resort destination.

Golfito's identity is closely linked to fishing, port activities, agriculture, and the history of banana production in southern Costa Rica. The town developed as an important regional center for the banana industry, and remnants of this period can still be seen in the area's layout and older buildings. Today, fishing and tourism play important roles in the local economy, with guides and boat operators serving visitors exploring the Golfo Dulce and surrounding forests. The nearby communities also reflect the multicultural character of Costa Rica's southern Pacific region, where rural and coastal traditions remain part of everyday life.

The Golfo Dulce is one of Golfito's defining natural features, with calm waters bordered by rainforest-covered mountains. Boat trips can explore the gulf, mangroves, and nearby coastline, where dolphins, sea turtles, rays, and seasonal humpback whales may be encountered. Piedras Blancas National Park protects lowland rainforest north of the gulf and provides habitat for monkeys, sloths, scarlet macaws, and other wildlife. Golfito National Wildlife Refuge protects forested slopes immediately around the town, while beaches and forest trails provide additional opportunities to experience the region's coastal environment.

Seafood is prominent in Golfito's local cuisine, with fish and other Pacific catches appearing alongside Costa Rican staples such as rice and beans, plantains, ceviche, and casado. The town's waterfront and fishing activity provide a visible connection between local food and the surrounding ocean. A distinctive feature of Golfito is its setting within the Golfo Dulce, an unusual tropical fjord-like gulf surrounded by steep forested terrain. The combination of a working port, protected rainforest, sheltered marine waters, and access to the Osa Peninsula makes Golfito an important base for exploring southern Costa Rica.
